Whirlpool washer — Error Code LD

What it means

The LD (Long Drain) error signifies that the main control board has determined the water level hasn't receded as expected. When the drain cycle begins, the board powers the drain pump and tracks the water level using the pressure transducer or pressure switch. If the pressure sensor fails to detect an empty state (the reset point) after roughly 5 minutes of continuous pumping, the board triggers the LD code. This safety feature stops the cycle to prevent flooding, pump motor overheating, or running a spin cycle while the tub is still wet. Usually, this points to a blockage in the drainage system, a mechanical pump issue, or an obstruction in the pressure sensing line.

Likely Causes

   Clogged Drain Pump or Coin Trap

   Small objects like hair pins, coins, lint, or stray socks can slip past the tub and jam the drain pump impeller or the coin trap/filter, creating a physical barrier to water flow.

   Kinked or Blocked Drain Hose

   The corrugated drain hose might be pinched behind the unit, or your home’s standpipe could be obstructed, causing water to backflow into the washer.

   Failed Drain Pump Motor

   The drain pump motor windings may suffer from an electrical open or short. Alternatively, the plastic impeller can break off the shaft, causing the motor to hum without actually moving any water.

   Clogged Pressure Hose

   Detergent buildup or grime can block the air dome or the clear vinyl hose connected to the pressure switch, tricking the board into thinking the tub is still full.

   Main Control Board Failure

   In rarer instances, the relays on the main control board may fail, preventing the delivery of 120V AC to the drain pump during the drainage phase.

How to clear / reset

To reset the LD code temporarily, hit the Pause/Cancel button twice or unplug the machine from the wall for 3 to 5 minutes to perform a hard reset. Note that if water remains in the tub or the blockage persists, the code will reappear during the next cycle. You must manually empty the tub—perhaps using a wet/dry vac or by siphoning water through the drain hose into a bucket—and clear any debris before the washer will function correctly again.
