Whirlpool washer — Error Code LF

What it means

The LF (Long Fill) alert on your Whirlpool unit means the central control board hasn't measured the expected water level within the standard timeframe, usually about 10 minutes. When a cycle begins, the board pushes 120V AC to the water inlet valve solenoids to trigger the water intake. Simultaneously, it tracks input from the pressure transducer or water level pressure switch. If the sensor fails to detect the necessary air pressure shift that signifies a full tub before the clock runs out, the board stops the process, closes the valves, and displays the LF code. This error essentially points to a failure in water delivery or detection. It often results from restricted flow, a siphoning issue where water leaves the tub as it enters, or a malfunction in the pneumatic loop—specifically the pressure switch or hose—preventing the board from seeing the actual water level.

Likely Causes

   Closed or Restricted Water Supply

   The hot or cold taps at the wall might be partially shut, or the inlet hoses behind the machine could be kinked, which severely limits water volume.

   Clogged Inlet Valve Screens

   Sediment, debris, or mineral buildup—common in areas with hard water like parts of Spokane—can plug the mesh screens inside the water inlet valve, choking off the flow even if your home pressure is fine.

   If your drain hose is inserted too deeply into the standpipe, or if the standpipe height is under 39 inches, water may be siphoning out of the tub while the washer is trying to fill.

Keep in mind that this only clears the notification, not the actual fault. If you don't address the water supply, blocked screens, or pressure sensing issues, the control board will simply trigger the LF code again during the next fill phase.
